Barreworks, based in Richmond, has the accolade of being London’s original and longest-running barre studio. Their workouts are uniquely designed for anyone who wants to achieve the body of a dancer, or just keep fit.

What the classes offer:

Barreworks Barre Ballet Workout StudioUsing the ballet barre as a basis for a complete body workout, the exercises involve dynamic and static movements, isometric holds, core strengthening and luxurious orthopaedic stretching. You do not need any previous dance or exercise experience, and all classes are entirely suitable for beginners. With regular attendance, you will build long, lean muscle and achieve the perfect posture of a dancer’s body. Think sculpted arms, a trimmed waist and a lifted seat… There is no jumping around and no wildly beating heart – so no need to shower after the class. This is highly efficient exercise that can be done anywhere, anytime.

The studio also welcome expectant mums:

Barreworks Barre Ballet Workout StudioDiscovering you are pregnant is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming and a little confusing. Mixed (and often contradictory) theories about exercise during pregnancy can lead you to conclude that it’s just better just not to exercise at all. This couldn’t be further from the truth. You should always follow the advice of your GP or care-giver but, in principle, there is no reason why you shouldn’t exercise all the way through your pregnancy (whenever you feel up to it). In fact, there are plenty of reasons why you should! Benefits include:

– An easier pregnancy

– An easier labour

– Healthier, calmer babies

– A faster return to your pre-pregnancy weight

– Less likelihood to suffer depression and severe tiredness

– Overcoming morning sickness

Barreworks Barre Ballet Workout StudioBarreworks’ unique and highly-effective exercises are suitable for all stages of pregnancy. They always take individual needs into account and you will be fully supervised during any class you take. Barreworks do a full screening before you begin, and will make minor modifications where required as you progress through your pregnancy and/or if you encounter any limitations to your movement. Instructors are fully trained in ante-natal exercise, and they provide support materials to take home so that you feel well-informed about what your body is able to do at this time.

Barreworks don’t run dedicated ante and post-natal classes because their clients enjoy being able to take a regular class and ‘test their mettle’ along with everyone else. It is testament to the versatility and effectiveness of the method that differing levels of ability and individual requirements can be catered for in a single class. Numbers are limited to 11 people, so you will always receive personalised attention and correction.

So whatever your situation, go join them at the barre!
