Mrs Herbert's Music Classes

Mrs Herbert’s Music Classes for babies are something of a Barnes institution, having run for many years mainly through word of mouth. The classes are run by Lowell Herbert and, despite her background as a local music teacher, singer, and composer and writer of children’s songs, she doesn’t aim to turn babies into musical prodigies or start them learning music. They’re all about relaxation and space.

Mrs Herbert's Music ClassesThe hour-long classes are tailored for babies from nineteen weeks until they start to crawl, which is a small window of time when babies benefit from gentle, baby-led sessions. The classes are based on the general approach used in IAIM (International Association of Infant Massage) Baby Massage classes. They involve singing songs, doing gentle exercises and movements and playing instruments, with discussion of parenting ideas encouraged in between.

Mrs Herbert's Music ClassesBabies know when they are ready to do new things and in this class they can watch and join in when it is right for them… and if they need to explore and chew on the instruments first, then that is what they do! It’s unusual, as music performance goes, but when the players are babies, you have to expect unconventional technique. It’s not unusual for the tiny participants to whack a xylophone with a stick like a giant lollipop while others suck on their ‘lollipops’ and look around them, taking it all in. (The sticks are of course washed after each session.)

Mrs Herbert's Music ClassesMrs Herbert’s Music Classes for babies take place on Tuesdays from 10.15-11.15am at Mrs Herbert’s house in Barnes. They operate on a pay-as-you-go basis, and cost £10.00 per session. For more information, you can take a look on their website or email Lowell. One new mum described the classes as calm and welcoming; another said they were without doubt the high point of her maternity leave…

“Mrs Herbert’s Baby Music classes were without doubt the high point of my maternity leave. Having tried various different classes with my son including sign language and other music classes it was a revelation to come across something so personal and individual. The interaction between Lowell and the babies is unique amongst such classes and the calm and welcoming environment she creates is a true oasis in what can be a stressful time. Not only are the babies wooed with creative, catchy songs (many of which are written by Lowell herself) but mums and carers are encouraged to discuss how they’re feeling – each week a point of discussion around parenting was introduced which I found extremely useful. The classes are small contributing to the intimate atmosphere giving babies and mums a real sense of relaxation and space. With her wealth of experience I found Lowell’s support invaluable. The class is much more than just a music class, a haven of nurture and help in an old fashioned setting which it is so rare to come across these days.”, Millie and Imogen
